I've added another issue, December 3rd, 1914's New England Edition. To be perfectly honest I'm not sure what differentiates the NE Edition from the "Standard" edition yet, other than the inside back page has a section entitle "New England and Other Matters." When I get some issues from the same date I might be able to make a better judgement.

Works in this issue include:

Ammon's Long Whip by C.H. Claudy

Old Plantation Days by Archibald Rutledge

The Art of Conversation by Mrs. Burton Harrison

The "Torpedo" Girl by Gardner Hunting (Chapter 5 of 5)

Under the "Spouter" by Fisher Ames Jr.

A column on "The European War," namely World War I.

A timely piece called "How to Keep Resolutions"

A great Campbell's Tomato Soup ad, "Under the Love-Apple Tree"

I haven't annotated it yet (still haven't done the last ones either! who's got time!)

Link: The Youth's Companion - December 3rd, 1914 - Vol. 88 - No. 49 - New England Edition

Technorati Tags: the youth's companion, vintage, ads, history, new england, writing, literature

I've added a few more issues. Mostly complete ones, but a few seem to be short a page or two... I acquired these from eBay, and I've got a lot more to scan in. Some of these are quite a bit older than the original set.

I still have to annotate these, but here are the links to their respective pages. (Edit: !!! There is one page missing I have to go back in and scan! Argh.)

- February 15th, 1883
- February 11th, 1886
I've also added a category into the library where I'll post images of other old newspapers, ephemera, etc. I come across. I've got some Wisconsin newspapers from the 20s and 30s that will go in there.

Well, here it is. I'm still working on it, namely the theming. I haven't even started theming the library yet, so it's still stuck in default mode. It'll change. I've added a few more issues (I've got a bunch more yet to scan!)

I hope you enjoy the new look, and with the RSS feeds it should help keep you up to date with new additions!

IN July, 2007 my parents came across a stash of old newspapers, and pages of The Youth's Companion underneath a drawer in a built-in cabinet in their house. The house was built in the late 20's by my great-grandfather.

THESE pages of The Youth's Companion were addressed to my great uncle, who would've been a young lad at the time, and must've been a great source of entertaining reading, judging by the missing pages and the general condition. Unfortunately only one issue was complete, and time had taken its toll on all of the material there.

I'VE reproduced those pages here for historical purposes, to give a bit of insight into what the kids of the 20's were reading for fun. I think it sure beats sitting in front of the television watching cartoons.

IT'S also interesting to read about the current events of the day, and the contemporary perspectives. The advertising is a lot of fun as well.

I HOPE you enjoy this. If this goes well I will look into acquiring and digitizing more issues, and getting The Youth's Companion Project off the ground.
